Obagi Medical Products are named after their creator, Dr Zein Obagi – a skin care expert. The products themselves are prescription skin care systems, aimed at preventing and treating the most common skin concerns in adults. Issues such as rosacea, hyperpigmentation, acne and photodamage are aided, and the products themselves are only available via prescription, through doctors and dermatologists in the United States. They are also available through specialist medical centers, spas and plastic surgeons. The company is based in Long Beach, California, and Dr Obagi works out of his center in Beverly Hills, and various locations around the world.

The Obagi Nu-Derm System is aimed at treating moderate to severe sun damage by accelerating the turnover of skin cells, and also treats freckles and age spots. Customers have praised the System, stating their acne or melasma (dark patches of skin on the face, usually caused by sun exposure generating melanin in the deeper tissue layers) has all but disappeared. It promotes even skin tone by generating more uniform cells at the deepest levels of the skin.

The system has a foaming cleanser and a gel cleanser, sunblocks, toners, exfoliators, eye creams, moisturizers and a cream to soothe skin irritations.  The Obagi-C Rx System is used to treat mild to moderate sun damage, and the system is made up of  everything from a cleanser to a clarifying serum, a night cream and exfoliating day lotion (with or without SPF 12), or a sun screen.

The Obagi Blue Peel System can only be performed in your doctor’s office (or a specialist who has been properly trained and working under a doctor, and only if permitted by law) and is used in conjunction with the Nu-Derm System. You can expect some redness and minor irritation, but by six weeks your skin should appear clearer, smoother and younger looking.

The Professional-C Serums offer maximum antioxidant protection to help guard against aging, by preventing fine lines and wrinkles. They come in four concentrations to target your specific needs and skin conditions. The serums provide up to two times the penetration of the major competitor serums.
Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. system contains 5% liquid benzoyl peroxide in the serum gel, to penetrate the pores and clear the problems. There is also a cleansing gel and a 2% salicylic acid serum minimizes blemishes by reducing the oil at the pore level.

The company states a 13% reduction in whiteheads and blackheads and a 23% reduction in sore red acne after one week of use. CLENZIderm can only be obtained from a doctor, and treats the three main causes of acne – elimination of the bacteria that causes acne, removal of skin cell build up and decreasing oiliness of the skin.
