How To Buy Skin Care Products

There are literally thousands of different skin care products available today and it is little wonder that many of us feel overwhelmed with the vast amount of choice we have. Buying skin care products does not have to be confusing as long as you know what you are looking for and decide what your skin needs before you hit the shops. Here are some guidelines which will help you to choose.

The first thing to know is that the product labels are essential to understand. You need to know what you are buying and what will be applied to your skin every day. The most used active ingredient will appear first on the label and the least used will be at the end, similar to food labels.

You need to be able to recognize any ingredients which might do you more harm than good. It is best to avoid any products that contain astringents, alcohols or names such as sorbitol, laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl. Some very cheap products contain cheap fillers to keep the product at a low price. Certain perfumes and colorants are products to be wary of, as some can cause blemishes, break outs or skin irritation.

To avoid harmful ingredients and chemicals, using natural products might be the solution. Natural items such as fruit, honey, vegetables, oils and milk can be used to manufacture gentle and effective products for all types of skin and skin conditions. Lanolin and aloe vera are used in products designed to moisturize and soothe the skin in the most gentle way. Not all products containing such items are totally natural though so you still have to read the whole label to check.

There is a wide range of skin care lotions and creams to choose from, ranging from basic daily moisturizers to anti-aging regimens and acne treatments. Wrinkles are sadly unavoidable in the long run but there are products available which can be used to slow down the appearance of fine lines and prevent wrinkles appearing. Beta-hydroxy acids (BHA) and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) are two very effective ingredients commonly found in anti-aging skin care products. These acids are found naturally in certain plants and fruits such as grapes and apples. They work by getting rid of dead skin cells to encourage new cell growth. This improves the appearance and condition of the skin.

Skin care products containing tretinoins are only available by prescription from your dermatologist or doctor. Tretinoins reduce the appearance of wrinkles and can reverse sun damage to the skin. These products are considered a medication rather than a cosmetic because they alter the skin's cell structure. Tretinoins are chemicals which work by rejuvenating the skin, replacing it with healthier, newer skin. They can treat fine lines, rough patches, dark skin spots and wrinkles. If you have serious skin problems, you should ask your dermatologist or doctor for advice on how best to treat it.

When you know about ingredients, the next thing to do is find out what type of skin you have. If you are not sure, you can ask a dermatologist. This is an especially good idea if you suffer from rashes, allergic reactions or breakouts. Many people are unaware what their own skin type is and assume that every skin care product is suitable. This is completely wrong and you can actually do more harm than good if you use the wrong product. For example, if your skin is oily and you use a greasy cream to moisturize, you risk plugging the pores even more and the condition of your skin might get worse. If your skin tends to be dry and you use a product containing alcohol, this can leave the skin feeling tight and more dried out than before.

Try to determine whether your skin is dry, oily, combination (dry parts and oily parts) or if you are prone to acne or breakouts. You might have sensitive skin that needs special care or perhaps you are allergic to certain ingredients commonly found in skin care preparations. Some women choose products which contain only natural ingredients and others are looking for a healthy, anti-aging product to make their skin appear as young as possible.

You might need to try a few different products before you find one you like the look, feel, smell and price of, before settling on one.

Here are five good tips to help you choose the best skin care products:

1. Skin Type -  if you do not know what type of skin you have, you will be unable to choose the correct products for your own personal needs. Most people are either dry, oily, combination or sensitive.

2. Read the Label - it is important to read the whole label before buying a skin care product. Look for product containing a lot of water (as the first or second ingredient). This might be listed as aqua. Water is essential for well-hydrated skin.

3. What Season is it?  Your skin type might change during the course of the year. For example, if your skin tends to be sweaty and oily in the summer, take this into account when purchasing sunscreen or moisturizers. If you suffer from dry skin in the winter, avoid anything containing astringents or alcohol because this will just dry it out even more.

4. Check Prices - some products can be very expensive so you need to work out how much of the product you will be using and how many times a day it will be applied. What type of results does it promise? The most expensive products are not necessarily the best ones. Also, just because an expensive product gives a good result on one person does not mean it will be suitable for the next person. A product with a lower price might have to be applied more.

5. Use Faithfully - you need to use a product the way it was intended to be used if you expect it to work. This includes sunscreen and anti-aging creams. Sunscreen is to protect you whenever you are outdoors. This means it should be applied before walking down the street as well as when you are lying on the beach. If a product says to use it twice a day, you need to use it once in the morning and once before bed.
