Acne skin care products like Vilantae (d-Calcium Pantothenate) Vitamin B5 are a fairly new way to fight acne that is just starting to become popular.  Knowledge of its benefits have been relatively unknown until 1997 when Dr. Lit-Hung Leung, M.D. published his studies on d-Calcium Pantothenate's effects in preventing acne.

Through years of research, he obtained results that are quite interesting. What are the side effects of taking B5 ? A lightening of the stool is the main side effect. Mild diarrhea happens in some cases but is not very common. Severe diarrhea is very unusual. Please stop taking B5 however, if you get severe diarrhea.

Although many people have claimed that this product has worked for them, you have to realize a few things. 

The recommended daily allowance (RDI) for vitamin B5 is 10 mg.  In Dr. Nicholas Perricone's book, "The Acne Prescription," he indicates that no adverse side effects are likely even up to 1,000 mgs. a day, but, he only advises a maximum of 10 to 250 mg. a day to fight acne (along with other vitamins and minerals also).

The daily dosage for Vilantae Vitamin B5 is up to 20 pills a day at 510 mg. per pill !  That means you would be taking 10,200 mg. a day !  At their website, they state :

"The purpose of the 20 capsules per day is to force the body into producing more coenzyme A. It has to be initially jarred. After greater coenzyme A production has started, the number of capsules taken per day can be reduced to a maintenance dose of between 4-15 capsules per day."

They do ask you to take several pills a day and taper it down over time and that may be tough for many people.  Although this product has many testimonials (see website below), many doctors believe in taking a variety of vitamins and minerals to reduce your acne (vitamin A, all B complex, C, D and so on).  But, ...

Dr. Lit-Hung Leung, M.D., the inventor of Vilantae (d-Calcium Pantothenate), has tested this product for many years and has some research to back his claims (see website below for more information).  It apparently works similar to the drug Accutane, which is often prescribed by Dermatologists to treat acne.
